What's the difference between a 3 fin and 5 fin surfboard?

A 3 fin board only has three fin boxes and can only run a thruster. A 5 fin board has five boxes, giving you the option to run a thruster, a quad, or on some boards, a 2+1 setup.

Do 5 fin sets work in any board?

Only in boards with a 5 fin box layout. The fin system also needs to match… FCS II fins won't fit Futures boxes and vice versa.

When should I ride a thruster vs quad with my 5 fin set?
