What's the difference between 2+1 and a thruster? 

A thruster uses three equal fins for balanced drive and pivot, the standard shortboard setup. A 2+1 uses a large centre fin with small side bites, producing a smoother, more drawn-out feel. Very different sensations.

What size centre fin should I use in a 2+1 setup?

A rough guide is one inch of fin height per foot of board length, so a 9'0" board suits around a 9" fin. Adjust depending on how much glide versus pivot you want.
