How to Use Retractable Tie-Down Straps
-
Inspect the Straps:
-
- Check the tie-down straps for any signs of damage or wear. Ensure they are in good condition before use.
-
Positioning the boards:
-
Place your surfboards or SUP’s on the roof racks with the largest on the bottom, fins up & to the back.
-
To ensure your boards have the safest journey and that your car doesn't get wax on it, it’s recommended to use a boardbag & remove the fins.
-
-
Positioning the straps:
-
Feed the tie downs over the surfboards under the roof rack on the other side & back over the boards.
-
The strap should go back under the roof rack and the buckle should be hanging next to the rail of the boards.
-
Repeat this for both roof racks
-
-
Securing the boards:
-
Feed the tongue of the strap under buckle and firmly begin to pull the strap back down to tighten it.
-
Evenly adjust each strap by tightening or loosening the buckle so that the boards are firmly held in position & level.
-
Overtightening the straps can cause damage, in the form of deck compressions & crushed rails.
-
Tip: It is highly recommended not to use trade ratchet straps with surfboards as they will crush the lightweight foam & fibreglass if over tightened.
-
-
Double check:
-
Double check the boards are firm & securely held in place without damaging each other.
-
The excess strap strap can either be tucked into the door & closed, tucked into a board bag zipper or tied to the roof racks.
-
If left loose it could become a hazard and will flap in the wind.
-
-
Speed & Sound:
-
Roof tie downs can be known to make vibrations and sounds at higher speed. This varies from car to car & strap to strap.
-
The vibration usually occurs where the strap is flat & not touching anything. EG the strap where the strap is suspended going from the roof rack to the first rail of the surfboard. You can put one twist in the strap before fastening and this can reduce the vibration drastically.
-
Be sure to check tie downs regularly on long road trips as the vibration of the car will cause boards to move & straps to loosen.
-
-
Lockable Tie Downs
-
Lockable Tie Downs such as Kanulocks, can now be locked with the key.
-
-
Release the Straps:
-
To release the tie-down straps follow the steps in reverse
-
Find the end of the strap, loosen the buckle & pull through the strap, remove each strap & then the surfboards.
-
By following these steps, you can safely and effectively use tie-down straps to secure your boards.
